Lay down a strong foundation with neutral colours first – lean heavily on browns and black in your background colours (like tablecloths and ribbons) and use taupes, cremes, gray and white in the foreground (like place mats, dishware, and place cards). Pick squared-out furniture and decorative elements, like tables and chairs with clean lines and square lamps and lanterns. Paper lanterns come in a variety of shapes and can be a really easy way to create geometric lines in your lighting.
